Anaxarēte, schönes Mädchen auf Cypern, gegen welche Iphis, ein armer Jüngling, so in Liebt entbrannte, daß er sich an ihrer Thür erhing. Da sie lachend zusah, als man ihn zu Grabe trug, verwandelte sie Venus in Stein; dies Steinbild stand zu Salamis im Tempel der Venus.
