Baird (spr. Bärd), Sir David, geb. um 1756, trat 1772 als Fähnrich in die englische Infanterie,[222] ward 1778 Lieutenant u. Capitän, ging 1779 mit seinem Regiment nach Ostindien, wo dasselbe sogleich gegen Hyder Ali verwendet, aber fast vernichtet u. B. gefangen wurde; erst 1784 wurde er befreit. 1790 wurde er Oberstlieutenant u. machte die Belagerung von Seringapatam u. Pondichery mit; er wurde 1795 Oberst, 1797 Brigadier u. 1798 Generalmajor, leitete 1799 den Sturm auf Seringapatam, übernahm 1801 ein Commando in Ägypten, führte 1806 als Generallieutenant die Expedition nach dem Cap, das er nahm, befehligte 1807 eine Division vor Kopenhagen unter Cathcart, ward 1809 Baronet, 1814 General en Chef der Truppen in Irland, 1819 Gouverneur von Kinsal u. 1827 vom Fort Georges; er st. 1829.
