Beth-Horon

Beth-Horon (d.i. Ort der Höhlung, a. Geogr.), 1) das obere, Levitenstadt, u. 2) (Bethar), das niedere, nahe bei einander liegende Städte, im Stamme Ephraim, von Salomo befestigt. Nicht weit davon war ein Gebirgspaß, wo Josua die 5 Könige Kanaans schlug u. Judas Makkabäus die Syrer unter Seron u. dann unter Nikanor überwand; auch der Römer Cestius ward dort besiegt; jetzt Bethur od. Beït-Ur, welches noch in das obere (El-Foka) u. das untere (El-Tahta) zerfällt.
