Bothwell (spr. Boßnell), James Hephurn, Graf von B., Günstling von Maria Stuart, Mitschuldiger am Morde ihres Gemahls Heinrich Darnley, wurde aber losgesprochen u. vermählte sich mit der Königin. Der Adel nöthigte ihn zu fliehen u. setzte die Königin zu Lochleven gefangen; s. Schottland (Gesch.). B. flüchtete nach den Orkney-Inseln, trieb Räuberei u. ging nach Dänemark, wo er verhaftet wurde u. nach 10 Jahren starb.
