Carentan

Carentan (spr. Karangtang), Stadt im Arrondissement St. Lo, des französischen Departements la Manche; liegt sumpfig, an der Taute u. ist dadurch natürlich Festung; Hafen, Schloß, Spitzen- u. Kattunfertigung; Handel mit Getreide, Hanf, Flachs, Leinwand, Cider, Honig u. Seefischen; 3200 Ew. C. wurde 1574 vom Grafen Montgommery erobert, ging aber bald wieder an die Ligue verloren.
