Casus belli

Casus belli (lat., Kriegsfall), in der diplomatischen Sprache der Fall, in welchem ein Staat sich veranlaßt sieht, einem andern den Krieg zu erklären, od. die Handlung einer souveränen Macht, welche von einer anderen der Kriegserklärung gleichgeachtet wird. Bei verbündeten Staaten ist der Angriff einer feindlichen Macht auf die eine gewöhnlich ein C. b. für die andere u. heißt dann auch Casus foedĕris, Bündnißfall, d.h. der Fall, in welchem die verbündete Macht dem Bundesgenossen Hülfe zu leisten verpflichtet ist.
