Catullus

Catullus, Cajus Valerius, römischer Dichter, geb. 86 v. Chr. zu Verona, lebte in Rom, wo er bald angesehene Freunde, z.B. Cicero, sich erwarb, u. auf seiner Villa auf der Halbinsel Sirmio am Gardasee; er war ein Gegner der Machthaber der damaligen Zeit, bes. des Cäsar, den er scharf tadelte. Ein öffentliches Amt bekleidete er nicht; die Begleitung des Prätors L. Mummius nach Bithynien war eine Lustreise. Er stand früher in einem intimen Verhältniß zu der Clodia, der Schwester des berüchtigten Claudius (der von ihm gefeierten Lesbia) u. st. 57 v. Chr. Er schr. lyrische Gedichte (übrig noch 116), außer dem jetzt allgemein ihm abgesprochenen Pervigilium Veneris (einer Einladung zur Nachfeier der Venus am Vorabend des Festes gesungen, von Bürger nachgeahmt), leichte Oden, naive Lieder u. Epigramme; im Heldengedicht brach er unter den Römern die Bahn durch einen kleinen epischen Versuch: Epithalamium Pelei et Theditos (herausgegeben von Lenz, Altenb. 1787, mit Übersetzung von Krebs, 1813). Die Gedichte C-s wurden im 14. Jahrhundert von Benvenuto di Camposani zu Verona entdeckt u. herausgegeben gewöhnlich mit Tibullus u. Propertius, zuerst 1472, allein: Padua 1737; von Döring (Lpz. 1788 bis 1792, 2 Bde.); Sillig (Gött. 1823); Lachmann (1829); Haupt (1853); die Carmina minora von Forbiger, Lpz. 1794; deutsch übersetzt (im Auszuge) von Ramler, Lpz. 1793 u. 1802; von Schwenck, Frkf. 1829; ausgewählte Gedichte, Reinking, Münst. 1837, von Th. Heyse, Berl. 1855.
