Clarkson, Thomas, geb. 1760 zu Wisbeach in Cambridgeshire, war mit Wilberforce der Erste, der die Freilassung der Negersklaven in Anregung brachte u. auf dessen Anregung die African Institution zur Aufnahme entlassener Negersklaven gebildet wurde (s. Sklaverei). Dieser Angelegenheit widmete er sein ganzes Leben u. sah sich endlich 1807 durch Abschaffung des Sklavenhandels belohnt; er st. 27. Septbr. 1846 u. schr.: On the sla very and commerce of the human species (Preisschrift).
