Condottiēri

Condottiēri (ital.), 1) Rottenführer; 2) im Mittelalter in Italien die Anführer von Soldtruppen, die für den Bestzahlenden fochten; die zahlreichen Fehden der italienischen kleinen Staaten brachten sie hervor, u. bald hatten sie alle militärische Macht an sich gerissen u. bemächtigten sich mit ihr zum Theil (wie Franz Sforza 1451) der Regierung der Staaten, denen sie dienten; die beiden Sforza's, die beiden Braccio's, Caraccioli, Carmagnioli, Coglierni, Guarnieri, Lando etc. waren die berühmtesten.
