Contrast

Contrast (v. lat.), 1) Abstich; 2) die Aufmerksamkeit erregende Nebeneinanderstellung einander widerstrebender Sinnenvorstellungen unter einem u. demselben Begriffe, wodurch das Eigenthümliche einer jeden um desto stärker hervortritt. Der C. versetzt die Einbildungskraft in ein Spiel mit Extremen, regt dadurch die Lebenskraft an u. hält die Aufmerksamkeit gespannt (vgl. Antithese). C-e kommen in allen bildenden Künsten vor; so in der Malerei, in Licht u. Schatten u. in Nebeneinanderstellen verschiedener Farben; in der Bildhauerkunst, in den einzelnen Gruppen, ja selbst in einer Figur, z.B. durch Erheben der Einen Hand, Sinkenlassen der anderen. Auch in der Musik sind C-e von großer Wirkung, u. dieselbe besteht im Grunde genommen nur durch dieselben; so ist das Forte nach dem Piano, eine plötzliche Pause, nachdem ein Forte vorausgegangen ist, ein C. Auch den Werken der Dichter, bes. der tragischen Poesie, verleihen C-e oft hohes Interesse; doch sollen die C-e nicht grell u. schroff neben einander stehen, u. auf der Vermittelung der C-e durch eine beide aufnehmende höhere Idee, in welcher sich das Widerstreitende harmonisch auflöst, beruht die Kunst des Dichters. Daher Contrastiren, abstechen, einen C. bilden.
