Coëfficient

Coëfficient (lat.), jeder Ausdruck, in welchem nichts von dem, was als Hauptgröße in einem Gliede angesehen wird, vorkommt, u. womit diese Hauptgröße multiplicirt ist. Wo die letztere keinen C. hat, ist 1 als solcher anzusehen. Je nachdem in einem Gliede die Buchstaben u. was mit ihnen durch Klammern od. das Divisionszeichen verbunden ist, wie in den Elementen der Buchstabenrechnung; od. die gesuchte Größe, wie in den algebraischen Gleichungen, od. die veränderliche Größe, wie in der Functionenlehre od. Analysis geschieht, als Hauptgröße angesehen wird: ist der C. beziehungsweise der Zahlenfactor, od. diejenige Verbindung von lauter gegebenen Größen; od. diejenige Verbindung von lauter unveränderlichen Größen, womit die Hauptgröße multiplicirt. So sind in der Buchstabenformel:

von den 3 Gliedern der Reihe nach die C.: 3, 1, 7; ferner in der algebraischen Gl. x2 + (m – n) x = mn m – n der C. vom zweiten Gliede; u. in der Reihe y – Ax + Bx2 + Cx2 etc. der C. A, B, C.
