Fife (spr. Feif), Grafschaft im südlichen Schottland, 22,35 QM.; grenzt an die Nordsee, an die Grafschaften Perth, Clackmannan u. Kinroß; im NW. gebirgig (die Lomond-Hills mit dem West-Lomond 1721 Fuß u. East-Lomond 1376 Fuß hoch), im SO. flach u. fruchtbar; Flüsse: Eden (fruchtbares Thal, How of Fife genannt), Leven, Ore, sämmtlich in die Nordsee mündend; Klima mild; Boden im Allgemeinen sehr fruchtbar u. gut angebaut; Producte: Weizen, Gerste, Hafer, Rüben, Kartoffeln, Bohnen; beträchtliche Rindviehzucht (die Fifeshire-Race ist berühmt), Schafe, Pferde, Tauben, Kaninchen; starke Fischerei; Steinkohlen, Eisen, Blei, Kupfer, Zink, Marmor, einige Edelsteine (namentlich Karneole u. Achate am Tay-Golf), Industrie in Leinen (Damast), Tuch, Eisen, Seifensiedereien, Bierbrauereien, Schiffsbau; Handel mit Kohlen u. Leinwand; 1851_: 153,011 Ew.; die Grafschaft enthält 61 Kirchspiele, 13 königliche Burgflecken, 1 Universität (St. Andrews) u. sendet 4 Mitglieder ins Parlament; Hauptstadt: Cupar of Fife am Eden; die wichtigste u. volkreichste Stadt ist Dunferline.
