Gath (a. Geogr.), 1) (G. Rimmon) eine der Fünffürstenstädte der Philister, Vaterstadt des Riesen Goliath, wurde unter Samuel von den Israeliten erobert, hatte aber unter Saul wieder eigne Könige; David eroberte G. u. legte eine Besatzung hinein; Rehabeam befestigte es noch mehr; dann war es zwischen Juda u. Israel streitig, kam auch wieder einmal an die Philister; Usia gewann es wieder u. schleifte die Mauern; nachher wechselte sein Besitz zwischen Juden, Syrern u. Ägyptiern. 2) (G. Rimmon, Geschtha, Githaim) Grenzstadt des Stammes Dan u. zugleich Levitenstadt; jetzt ein Dorf unweit Jassa; 3) (G. Rimmon) Stadt im Stamm Manasse, ebenfalls Levitenstadt; 4) G. (Chepher), Stadt im Stamme Sebulon in Galiläa; jetzt Dorf Mesched; Geburtsort des Propheten Jonas, dessen Grab man noch in der Moschee zeigt.
