Gibbon (spr. Gibbn), Edward, einer der bedeutendsten englischen Geschichtsschreiber, geb. 27. April 1737 zu Putney in Surreyshire; trat 1752 in Oxford zur Katholischen Kirche, aber in Lausanne wieder zur Reformirten über, war 1766–1783 mehrmals Parlamentsmitglied, bekleidete unter dem Ministerium North das Amt eines Lord of Trade, lebte dann 10 Jahr in Lausanne u. st. 16. Jan. 1794 in London; er schr.: The history of the decline and fall of the Roman empire, Lond. 1777–88, 6 Bde., Fol. (deutsch von Wenck, Schreiter u. Beck, Lpz. 1805–1807, 19 Bde., von Joh.
