Goldsmith

Goldsmith (spr. Gohldsmiddh), Oliver, geb. 10. Novbr. 1728 zu Pallas in der irländischen Grafschaft Longford, Sohn eines Landpredigers; er wurde Anfangs für die Handlung bestimmt, studirte aber dann in Dublin Theologie. Dort entwich er u. obgleich er bald zurückkehrte, so vereitelte sein Leichtsinn doch seine kirchliche Anstellung, u. er studirte nun 1752 bis 1754 in Edinburg Medicin. Wegen unvorsichtiger Bürgschaft mußte er fliehen, ging 1755 einige Zeit nach Leyden u. durchzog 1756 die Niederlande, Frankreich, Deutschland, die Schweiz u. Oberitalien zu Fuß als Flötenspieler. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England nährte er sich als Schriftsteller; Griffith nahm ihn 1757 als Mitarbeiter des Monthly Review an, aber nach 5 Monaten trennte er sich wieder von ihm, u. 1779 erschien sein Enquiry of the present state of taste and literature in Europe. Seitdem lebte er in wechselnden Vermögensumständen u. st. 4. April 1774. Sein Roman: The Vicar of Wakefield, Lond. 1766 (deutsch von Bode, Lpz. 1776, von A. W. Lindau, Dresd. 1825, von H. Döring, Erfurt 1839, von E. Susemihl, Lpz. 1841, von Ölsnitz 3. Aufl. Lpz. 1851) ist klassisch.
