Hastings (spr. Hehstings), 1) Borough in der englischen Grafschaft Sussex, unweit der Mündung des Bourne in den Kanal la Manche, mit schwachem Fort zum Schutz des versandeten Hafens, Theater, Rath- u. Zollhaus, 2 Freischulen, Fischerei, Schiffsbau, Kalkbrennerei, gute Seebäder, Eisenbahnverbindung mit Brighton, Tunbridge u. Canterbury; 17,000 Einw.; sendet 2 Mitglieder zum Parlament. H. ist einer der Cinque Ports (s.d.). Dabei Trümmern der alten Burg u. die Priorei of black canons, auch der Stein (the Conqueror's stone), auf dem Wilhelm der Eroberer, der hier zuerst landete, sein erstes Mittagsmahl verzehrte. Hier am 14. Oct. 1066 Sieg Wilhelms des Eroberers über Harald, König von England, s. England (Gesch.). In der Nähe St. Leonhard, Badeplatz. 2) Städtischer Bezirk mit Postamt (Post-township) in der Grafschaft Oswego des Staates New York (Nordamerika); 3000 Ew.; 3) Hauptort der Grafschaft Barry des Staates Michigan, am Thornapple River; 4) Fluß in Neu-Süd-Wales (Östliches Australien).
