Hood (spr. Huhd), 1) Samuel, Lord H., geb. 1724 zu Thornecombe in Devonshire; nahm Seedienst u. zeichnete sich bes. im Nordamerikanischen Kriege aus, wurde 1780 Baronet u. Admiral, 1783 irländischer Peer als Baron von Catherington, u. gehörte im Unterhause zur Opposition bis er 1786 Lord der Admiralität wurde. 1793 nahm er im Namen Ludwigs XVII. Toulon in Besitz, konnte es jedoch nicht behaupten u. nahm 1794 Corsica, das er auch wieder räumen mußte. In der Seeschlacht von Ouessant u. bei der Landung von Quiberon 1795 war er gegenwärtig, zog sich aber, da ihm die französische Flotte bei Brest entkam u. die Regierung damit unzufrieden war, zurück. wurde Viscount H. von Whitley, später Gouverneur von Greenwich u. st. 1816 in Bath. 2) Thomas, Sohn eines Buchhändlers, geb. den 23. Mai 1798 in London, war ursprünglich für den Handel bestimmt, widmete sich dann einige Zeit der Kupferstecherei, folgte aber seit 1821 seinem Hange zur Literatur u. st. den 3. Mai 1845 zu Kensal Green bei Paddington, wo ihm 1854 ein Denkmal errichtet wurde. Er war einer der beliebtesten u. fruchtbarsten Schriftsteller Englands im komischen u. humoristischen Fache u. schr. u.a.: Odes and addresses; Whims and oddities; National tales, 1827; The plea of the midsummer fairies; The comic annual; Tylney hall (Roman, deutsch von Grant, Bautzen 1842, 2 Bde.); Up the Rhine (Satyre auf die englischen Touristen), 1842; Eugene Aram's dream, 1829 (deutsch, Bromb. 1841); Song of the new Shirt u.a. Er gab auch die Zeitschrift Hoods Magazine heraus. Von seinen Poems erschien 1851 eine 4. Aufl. u. Sellen übersetzte in seinen Auserwählten Erzählungen, Lpz. 1828, mehrere seiner Tales. H. war zugleich guter Zeichner, der die Umrisse zu seinen humoristischen Schriften meistens selbst entwarf.
