Hooker (spr. Huker), 1) Richard, geb. 1553 in Exeter, studirte in Oxford, war erst hier Professor der Hebräischen Sprache, wurde 1584 Pfarrer an einer Kirche in Buckinghamshire u. Prediger in London; seit 1591 lebte er in Boscomb in Wiltshire u. st. 1600; er schr.: The laws of ecclesiastical polity, 1594 ff. 2) Sir Will. Jackson, geb. 1785 in Exeter, trat 1809 eine botanische Reise nach Island an u. wurde darauf Professor der Botanik in Glasgow, 1836 mit der Ritterwürde geehrt u. 1839 zum Director des königlichen Botanischen Gartens in Kew ernannt; er schr.: A tour in Iceland, Yarmouth 1811, 2. Naturwissenschaften, begleitete als Unterwundarzt der englischen Marine den Capitän James Roß auf seiner Antarktischen Expedition (1839–43), machte drei Fahrten nach dem Südpole mit, drang bis 78' 10'' 0''' Grade südlicher Breite vor, war Mitentdecker von Victoria-Land u. des Feuerberges Erebus u. besuchte viele Länder u. Inseln des Südmeeres. 1845 besuchte er Frankreich, Holland u. Belgien; wurde 1846 der Gesellschaft zur geologischen Vermessung der Vereinigten Königreiche beigegeben, u. dies leitete ihn auf das Studium der fossilen Pflanzen; im Novbr. 1847 trat er eine Reise nach Ostindien an, durchforschte dort die mittlern Theile des Himalaya u. einen Theil Tibets, wo er eine große Anzahl neuer Pflanzen, u.a. 37 bisher unbekannte Species Rhododendron entdeckte, ging dann mit Thomas Thomson nach dem östlichen Bengalen u. an die Grenzen Assams u. kehrte 1851 nach England zurück, mit 6000 Pflanzenarten, vielen Sämereien, 300 verschiedenen Hölzern etc. Im Jahre 1852 reiste er nach Frankreich, Deutschland u. der Schweiz.
