Illumination

Illumination (v. lat.), eine nächtliche Beleuchtung öffentl. Plätze, Gärten, einzelner Gebäude etc., od. ganzer Städte durch Kerzen od. Lampen, durch Erleuchtung der Fenster, mit Lampen behängte Bogen u. Gerüste, Gemälde, Inschriften etc., brennende Pechpfannen, Feuerwerke etc. bei feierlichen Gelegenheiten. Man theilt die I. in architektonische (Lichter-) I., welche Gegenstände bei der Nacht blos erleuchtet; transparente I., welche die Gegenstände durchsichtig macht; u. bunte I., welche durch farbige Lichter ergötzt.
