Philadelphĭa, Jakob, einer der berühmtesten Taschenspieler des 18. Jahrh., wurde um 1720 in Philadelphia (Nordamerika) von jüdischen Eltern. geboren, studirte daselbst Mathematik u. Mechanik, lebte dann längere Zeit zurückgezogen (wahrscheinlich mit mechanischen Versuchen beschäftigt) in England auf den Gütern des Herzogs von Cumberland, gab von 1758 an in London u. mehren andern englischen Städten mathematisch-physikalische Vorstellungen, bereiste dann zunächst Portugal u. von da bis 1781 alle größeren Städte Europas, wo er überall ähnliche Vorstellungen gab u. allgemein außerordentliches Aufsehn erregte. 1781 gab er die letzten Vorstellungen in der Schweiz; wo er sich dann hingewendet hat u. wou. auf welche Weise er gestorben, ist nie mit Gewißheit ermittelt, wohl aber auf die abenteuerlichste Weise darüber gefabelt worden, gewiß ist nur, daß er noch 1794–95 Schulpforte besuchte u. 1797 in Kehl u. Köthen gesehen worden ist.
