Podĭum (lat.), 1) Sockel; 2) erhabner Ort, um darauf zu treten; 3) Austritt, Erker an einem Gebäude, bes. an Schauspielgebäuden; 4) später im Theater der Platz vor den untersten Sitzen, rings um die Orchestra herum, wo zugleich die vornehmsten Personen auf beweglichen Sitzen ihren Platz hatten, darunter auch der Kaiser u. seine Familie, während Andere unter dem P. für den Kaiser einen besonderen erkerartigen Ausbau verstehen; 5) jetzt der vordere sichtbare Theil der Bühne, so weit er vom Vorhang abgeschnitten wird, s. ebd.
