Portland-Vase, eine in einem Begräbniß, welches man für das des Kaisers Alexander Severus u. seiner Mutter Julia Mammäa hielt, unter Papst VIII. (zwischen 1623–44) gefundene Vase, besteht aus einem blauen, durchsichtigen u. darüber einem weißen Glasfluß mit Reliefs, welche nach Winckelmann die Verwandlung der Thetis in eine Schlange, um dem Peleus zu entgehen, nach Veltheim (Vermuthungen über die P., in der Sammlung seiner archäologischen Abhandlungen, Helmst. 1800) die Geschichte der durch Hercules bewirkten Wiederkehr Alceste's aus der Unterwelt darstellen. Sie kam anfangs in die Barberinische Bibliothek in Rom (daher Barberinische Vase), später nach England in das Museum der Herzogin von Portland u. zuletzt in das British-Museum; hier wurde sie am 7. Februar 1845 von William Lloyd aus Muthwillen von dem Postament herabgerissen u. zerschellt, aber später von den Künstlern Doubleday u. Baldock mit großer Genauigkeit wieder zusammengesetzt. Vgl.
