Robins (spr. Robbins), Benjamin, geb. 1702 in Bath; Quäker, studirte erst Theologie, dann Physik u. Mathematik, verließ später die Quäker u. widmete sich der Politik u. war 1739 Secretär einer vom Parlamente mit Untersuchung des Benehmens des Ritters Walpole beauftragten Commission. Um 1742 wurde er bei der Woolwicher Artilleriecommission angestellt u. schr.: New principles of gunnery, Lond. 1742 (eine neue Theorieder Artillerie, deutsch von Euler, Berl. 1745). Auch erfand er, um die Kraft der Projectilen zu prüfen, den zusammengesetzten Pendel. R. wohnte 1747 der Vertheidigung in Bergen op Zoom bei, ging 1749[207] als Ingenieurgeneral der Englisch-Ostindischen Compagnie nach Ostindien u. st. 1751 in Madras. Er beschrieb Rich. Walters, Schiffspredigers bei Anson, Weltumsegelung, Lond. 1749 (in viele fremde Sprachen übersetzt). Werke, Lond. 1761, 2 Bde.
