Sterling (Easterling), im Mittelalter eine englische Silbermünze, welche unter Richard I. von England um 1190 aufkam. Der Name soll nach Ein. von dem Schlosse dieses Namens herkommen, nach And. aus Easterling, Münze von Osten, abgekürzt sein, weil Richard sie durch deutsche Münzmeister in deutscher Reinheit des Silbers schlagen ließ, od. von Steare, Regel, Gesetz. Ein damaliger Penny easterling wog 24 Gran, u. 240 solcher Pence machten ein Pound easterling = 12 Unzen aus, aus welchem das neuere Pfund Sterling (s.u. Pfund 4) e) entstand, welches aber nur den dritten Theil des alten Pfunds beträgt. Der S. ist eine große. Seltenheit u. kommt nur noch in wenigen Cabinetten vor.
