Surrey (spr. Sörri), Grasen von S., Name, welchen die ältesten Söhne der Howards, Herzöge von Norfolk, bis zum Tode des Stammhauses führten, s. Norfolk. Merkwürdig ist außerdem: Henry Howard, Graf von S., ältester Sohn des Herzogs Thomas Howard von Norfolk (s.d. 13), geb. 1516 in Kenninghall, trat 1540 in englische Kriegsdienste, führte 1542 eine Armee gegen Schottland u. 1544 als Feldmarschall gegen Frankreich. Mißtrauen des Königs u. Unvorsichtigkeit stürzten ihn; er wurde 1544 des Hochverraths angeklagt u. enthauptet. Er schr.: Poems, Lond. 1557, ebd. 1717, u. A., herausgeg. von Bell (zugleich mit denen Sackville's), ebd. 1854. Er schrieb die ersten Sonette in Englischer Sprache.
