Town

Town (engl., spr. Taun), die Stadt; in England jede incorporirte mit städtischen Gerechtsamen ausgestattete Gemeinde, gleichviel ob sie in das Unterhaus wählt od. nicht (Borough, s.d.); nur wenn die Stadt zugleich Sitz eines Bischofs ist, wird sie zur City, welcher Name daher unabhängig von der Größe, Einwohnerzahl od. sonstigen Bedeutung des Ortes ist. In den Vereinigten Staaten wird dagegen ein Ort durch seine Incorporation zur T. u. nennt sich, sobald er von einem Mayor u. Aldermen regiert wird, ohne weiteres City.
