Wan, 1) Ejalet im Türkischen Asien (Armenien), grenzt an Erzerum, Persien, Diarbekr u. Bagdad, ist sehr gebirgig (Nimrodtagh, Kurdisches Gebirg), hat mehre kleine, dem Tigris zulaufende Flüsse u. den See Wan (s. unten 3), auf den Gebirgen mildes, in den Thälern heißes Klima, 751 QM., geringe Bevölkerung (Osmanen, Turkmanen, Armenier, Kurden), welche wenig Ackerbau treiben, doch etwas Gemüse bauen, viel Viehzucht, Fischerei u. Jagd, auch etwas Handel mit Manna u. Galläpfeln gegen Eisenwaaren u. Putz treiben; 2) Hauptstadt hier, das alte Artemita (Semiramocerta), am südöstlichsten Ufer des Sees; Sitz des Pascha, Befestigung, Citadelle, schöne Gärten, Handel, Fischfang; 35,000 meist armenische Ew.; wurde 1387 von den Mongolen unter Timur erobert; 3) (Ardschisch, Arsissa, Ardschis, Ardsjisch), See hier, 67 QM., hat salziges Wasser, viele Fische, darunter eine ganz eigenthümliche, den Häringen ähnliche, wohlschmeckende Art (Tarikh).
