Whately, Richard, geb. 1786 zu Nonsuch in Surrey, studirte in Oxford, wurde 1822 Pfarrer in Halesworth, kehrte 1825 als Vorstand von St. Albans Hall nach Oxford zurück, wurde 1830 Professor der Staatswissenschaften daselbst u. 1831 Erzbischof in Dublin, wo er 9. October 1863 starb. Als Theolog stand er mit Arnold an der Spitze der Antipuseyiten u. im Oberhause stimmte er mit den Liberalen; als Erzbischof machte er sich bes. verdient um das Volksschulwesen in Irland. Er schr.: Historic doubts relative to Napoleon Bonaparte, 1821 (eine Parodie auf eine Schrift Humess, worin er dessen Beweise gegen die Existenz Jesu auf die des Kaisers Napoleon anwendete); Elements of Logic, 1826; Elements of Rhetoric, 1828; Lectures or Political Economy, 1831; On secondary punishments, 1833 (wodurch er den Anstoß zur Aufhebung des Deportationssystems gab); Collection of English synonyms, 1851; Lectures on the origin of civilization, 1855; auch gab er Rog. Bacons Essays mit Anmerkungen heraus.
