Whittington (spr. Uittingt'n), Richard, nach der britischen. Volkssage in Shropshire geboren, war sehr arm u. bettelte sich nach London hin, wurde im Hospital St. Johns Clerkenwel eine Zeit lang verpflegt u. fand dann in dem Hause des reichen Kaufmanns Fitzwarren als niederer Diener Unterhalt, lief aber in Folge übler Behandlung von Seiten des Hausverwalters davon. Verzweifelnd auf einem Stein zwischen Holloway u. Highgate sitzend, tönten ihm von Bowstreet herüber die Glocken wie: kehre um W., dreimal Lordmayor von London. Dieser Mahnung folgend, kehrte er um u. unternahm mit seinem Herrn eine Seereise, auf welche er nur eine trächtige Katze mitnahm. Als die Reisenden an eine Insel kamen, deren Bewohner von Mäusen unerhört gepeinigt wurden, liest W. seine Katze los, welche sogleich eine große Verheerung unter den Mäusen anrichtete. Von dem König der Insel dafür mit Schätzen überhäuft, kehrte W. heim, wurde 1397, 1406, 1419 Lordmayor von London u. stiftete mehre Armenhäuser u. ein College. Das College hob Eduard VI. wieder auf, die Armenhäuser aber bestehen, 1824 neu gebaut, noch u. führen noch heute den Namen W.-College, wo 29 arme, über 55 Jahr alte Frauen Unterhalt, Wohnung u. jährlich 30 Pfd. bekommen. Auch den Stein zeigt man noch, auf welchem W. gesessen u. die Glocken gehört haben soll.
