Aornos (nach Einigen vom sanskr. awara, Verpallisadirung, nach Andern vom griech., vogellos, wohin wegen seiner Höhe selbst Vögel nicht kommen, od. wo wegen der pestartigen Luft Vögel nicht leben), 1) Stadt in Baktriana mit Citadelle; 2) Fels u. Veste in Indien, an der Mündung des Koas in den Indos; von Alexander d. Gr. den dahin geflüchteten Einw. von Bazira durch List entrissen; 3) so v.w. Avernus. Daher auch Aorna, Höhlen, aus denen tödtliche Dünste stiegen.
