Auxilĭa

Auxilĭa (Auxiliares), 1) beiden Römern Hülfstruppen fremder Staaten; dagegen Socii, Hülfsvölker aus italischen Staaten, u. als diese das Bürgerrecht erhielten, aus den Provinzen u. von Bundesgenossen. Letztere erhielten nur Brod u. Fourage, jene Sold u. Kleidung, wenn sie nicht von ihrem Staat unterhalten wurden. Sie fochten meist als Leichtbewaffnete auf den Flügeln. Unter den Kaisern verschwand der Unterschied. 2) Zu Constantins des Großen Zeit, Abtheilung leichten Fußvolks zu 100 Mann, in den Provinzen vertheilt.
