Nairs

Nairs, auf der Küste Malabar in Ostindien eine Kaste, welche, etwa der Kriegerkaste der übrigen Hindu entsprechend, unmittelbar nach den Brahminen rangirt, sehr zahlreich u. mächtig ist u. eine große Menge von Eigenthümlichkeiten besitzt, unter andern die Ehe bis aufs äußerste u. schamloseste mißbraucht. Die angesehenste Familie unter den N. ist die der Tamuri, von den Europäern gewöhnlich die des Zamorin genannt. Vgl. Malabar.
