Beddoes (spr. Beddohs), Thomas, geb. 1754 zu Shissnäll in Shropshire; wurde 1786 Professor der Chemie in Oxford u. privatisirte seit 1792 in Bristol, wo er 1808 st. Er versuchte vergebens durch Einathmenlassen künstlicher Luftarten mehrere Krankheiten zu heilen. Er war auch Parlamentsmitglied u. gehörte zur Opposition, bes. gegen Pitts Ministerium. Er schr.: Observations on the nature and cure of calculus sea scurvy etc., Brist. 1793, 2 Thle. (übersetzt in Th. B. medicinischen Schriften, Leipz. 1794–96, 2 Bde.); Considerations on the medic. use of factitionsairs (übers. v. Zollikofer, Halle 1796); Reports principally conc. the effects of the nitrous acid in the venereal disease (übersetzt v. Friese, Bresl. 1799); Essay on the causes etc. of pulmonary consumption, Lond. 1800 (übersetzt Halberst. 1802, von Kühn, Lpz. 1810); Hygiea, a series of essays on health, Brist. 1802, 2 Bde.
