Neill (spr. Nell), 1) Patrick, geb. 1777, war Secretär der Wernerian Society in Edinburg u. starb am 5. Sept. 1852 in Canonmills bei Edinburg. Er besaß bedeutende naturhistorische, namentlich zoologische Sammlungen u. schr.: A tour through Orkney and Shetland, 1806; An account of the Basalts of Saxony, from the French of Daubuisson, 1814; The fruit-flower-and kitchen-garden, 1820. 2) James George Smith, geb. 1810 in der schottischen Grafschaft Ayrshire, trat 1826 als Offizier in die Division Madras (Ostindien), zeichnete sich im ersten Birmanenkriege unter Lord Amherst aus, befehligte 1835–36 die Leibwache des britischen Residenten am Hofe des Radscha von Nagpur, nahm am zweiten Birmanenkriege unter Lord Dalhousie Theil, übernahm im Krimfeldzug 1854 das Commando über ein türkisches Contingent, kehrte nach dem Pariser Frieden von 1856 nach Indien zurück, wurde Brigadegeneral, zeichnete sich im Seapoyfeldzug von 1857 bei Cawnpore aus u. fiel bei der Erstürmung von Delhi im September 1857.
