Buckland

Buckland (spr. Bökkländ), William, geb. 1784, studirte in Oxford Theologie, ging dann zum Studium der Naturwissenschaften über, wurde 1813 Lehrer der Mineralogie auf dem für diese Wissenschaft neuerrichteten Lehrstuhl u. 1818 auch Professor der Geologie u. Mitglied der Royal Society, 1827 wurde er in den engern Rath derselben gewählt u. siedelte 1845 nach London über, wo er zum Dekan von Westminster ernannt war. In Oxford gründete er das Geologische Museum, zum Theil aus Privatmitteln, u. in London bemühte er sich mit unausgesetztem Eifer für die Anlage von Quellwasserleitungen. Seit 1849 geisteskrank, st. er 1856 zu Clapham. Er nahm Theil an der Herausgabe der Bridgewaterbücher (die Urwelt u. ihre Wunder, übersetzt von Werner, Stuttg. 1837), veröffentlichte mehrere Abhandlungen in den Transactions of de Geol. Society, u. schr. u.a.: Reliqulae diluvianae, 2. Aufl., Lond. 1824; Geology and mineralogy considered with reference to natural theology, Lond. 1836, 2 Bde., deutsch von Agassiz, Neufchatel 1838–39, 2 Bde.
