Casīnum

Casīnum (a. Geogr.), feste Stadt der Samniter an der Grenze Latiums, am Casinus u. am Berge, wo jetzt das Kloster Casino (s. Monte Casino) sich erhebt; die Römer eroberten es u. schickten 312 v. Chr. eine Colonie dahin; Hannibal lagerte sich im zweiten Punischen Kriege unter dem Berg. In dem Ager Casinas wuchs treffliches Öl u. hatte Varro ein Landhaus. Jetzt noch Ruinen bei San Germano.
