Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll (Chem.), der harzige Pflanzenstoff, der den Blättern u. anderen grünen Pflanzentheilen ihre Farbe verleiht. Bei dem Gelbwerden der Blätter im Herbste geht das Ch. in eine mehr gelbe, mehr fettartige, durch Alkalien nicht grün werdende Substanz, Xanthophyll, uber. Aus den, im Herbst roth gewordenen Blättern mancher Bäume zieht Alkohol einen Farbstoff, der durch Bleizucker grün gefällt, aber aus dieser Verbindung als rother, in Wasser u. Weingeist löslicher, mit Alkalien wieder grüne Verbindungen gebender Stoff, Erythrophyll, ausgeschieden wird. Das Ch. ist eisenhaltig u. scheint im Pflanzenreiche das zu sein, was der rothe Farbstoff des Blutes im Thierreiche ist.
