Cäre

Cäre (a. Geogr.), eine der alten Zwölfstädte in Etrurien, am Fluß Cäritis (j. Eri) mit der in NO. liegenden Hafenstadt Pyrgi (j. S. Severo), wo der reiche, 384 v. Chr. von Dionysios von Syrakus geplünderte Tempel der Lucina stand u. berüchtigte Hetären waren; hieß Anfangs Agylla, soll von thessalischen Pelasgern erbaut sein u. war Sitz des Königs Mezentius. Seit 388 v. Chr. war C. mit den Römern verbunden, kämpfte 351 mit denselben gegen Tarquinii, kam aber in gänzliche Abhängigkeit von Rom. Als bei der Eroberung Roms durch die Gallier die Vestalinnen, Priester u. Heiligthümer der Stadt hier Aufnahme fanden, erhielt sie das Bürgerrecht. Das Recht der Cäretāni (Caeritum jus) war das älteste Municipalrecht in Italien. In der Nähe fanden sich heiße, von den Römern viel besuchte Bäder (Aqua ecaeretanae); in der Umgegend wuchs Wein u. Getreide u. wurde starke Schweinezucht getrieben; j. Cerveteri, wo alte Grabmäler entdeckt wurden. Vgl. Canina, Descrizione di Cere antica, Rom 1834.
