Dempster, Thomas, geb. 1559 in Cliftbog Schottland), studirte erst in Cambridge, dann Philologie u. Rechtswissenschaften in Paris; er lehrte zuerst seit 1576 die alten Sprachen am Collège de Navarra in Paris, dann in Toulouse, Nismes, Spanien u. wieder in Paris; von hier ging er in Folge eines ärgerlichen Vorfalls mit seinen Schülern nach England, wo ihn König Jakob I. zum königlichen Historiographen ernannte, wurde dann Professor der Pandekten in Pisa, nach 3 Jahren Professor der alten Literatur in Bologna u. st. auf einer Reise begriffen 1625 in Butri bei Bologna. Er schr. u.a.: De Etruria regali, herausgeg. von Th. Coke, Flor. 1723; Paralipomena ad Rosini antiquitates romanas, 1613; Zusätze zu Bened. Accolti De bello a Christianis contra barbaros gesto pro Christi sepulcro et Judaea recuperandis, 1623, Grön. 1731, u.a.; er gab auch den Claudianus (1607) u. Corippus De laudibus Justini (1610) heraus.
