Dole (spr. Dohl), 1) Arrondissement im französischen Departement Jura; 213/5 QM.; 73,000 Ew. in 8 Cantonen; 2) Hauptstadt darin, in einer angenehmen Gegend (Val d'amour) am Doubs; Handelsgericht, Militärhospital, schöne Kirche Notre Dame, Jesuitencollegium, College, Musikschule, Bibliothek, Bildergallerie, fertigt Hüte, Leder, Strümpfe, Mützen, Chemikalien u.a. In der Nähe römische Alterthümer (Amphitheater, Aquäduct, Straße) u. der Anfang eines Kanals, als Verbindung des Rheins u. der Rhone; 9300 Ew. D. ist ein Knotenpunkt der Eisenbahnen von Paris (Dijon) nach Neufchatel u. von Besançon nach Chalons sur Saone u. Lyon. – D. wurde 1479 von den Franzosen genommen, 1530 vom Kaiser Karl V. zur Festung gemacht, 1636 vergebens vom Prinzen Condé belagert, 1668 von den Franzosen erobert u. die Werke geschleift, aber von den Spaniern wieder genommen u. befestigt; 1674 wieder von den Franzosen genommen u. später die Werke demolirt. D. war sonst Hauptstadt der Franche Comte, mit Universität u. Parlament (beides jetzt in Besançon); 3) (La D.), Gebirgsgruppedes Jura im Schweizercanton Waadt, erhebt sich zwischen dem Genfersee u. dem Dappenthal mehr als 5000 Fuß hoch, besteht aus mehreren Gebirgskämmen u. Kuppen, von denen der höchste Gipfel, der eigentliche D., ein wegen der herrlichen Aussicht, die er über den Genfersee bis zum Montblanc gewährt, vielbesuchter Punkt (5178 Fuß hoch) u. von verschiedenen Seiten bequem zu besteigen ist. Die D. ist reich an seltenen Alpengewächsen.
