Equisēta (Schachtelhalme), 6. Klasse des Endlicherschen Systems aus der Cohorte Protophyta, mit blattlosem, gegliedertem Stängel, die Glieder mit gezähnten Scheiden versehen, die durch Verwachsung kleiner Blätter entstanden; der Fruchtstand am Ende des Stängels od. der Äste, kätzchen- od. ährenartig aus quirlich gestellten Schuppen zusammengesetzt; die Schuppen tragen auf ihrer Unterseite 4–7 in einen Kreis gestellte Sporenbehälter, welche häufig, länglich, an der inneren Seite der Länge nach gespalten sind u. zahlreiche Sporen enthalten, die kugelig, mit aufgesetztem Spitzchen u. zwei Fäden gestützt; die Fäden endigen beiderseits in eine spatelförmige Spitze, stehen kreuzweise, spiralförmig um die Sporen gerollt u. springen bei dem Eintrocknen elastisch zurück; Wurzelstock unterirdisch, gegliedert, kriechend; eine Familie: Equisetaceae.
