Mandeville (spr. Mändwill; Maundeville, spr. Mahndewill), 1) John de M., geb. um 1300 in England, ging aus Reiselust in den Dienst des Sultans von Ägypten, später in den des Großkhans von Kathai (China), besuchte mehre Länder Asiens, Afrikas u. Europas, kehrte 1356 zurück u. st. 1371. Seine Reisen, englisch, Lond. 1499, u. A. von Halliwell, ebd. 1839, lateinisch, Lyon 1480, deutsch, Augsb. 1481, 1482, 1484, italienisch, 1480, böhmisch von Laurentius, Pils. 1510 u. ö. 2) Bernhard von M., geb. 1670 in Dortrecht; lebte meist in London, wurde seiner Schriften wegen 1725 vor das Landgericht in Middlesex gefordert u. st. 1733 als Arzt in London. Er war entschiedener Antimoralist, welcher die philosophische Tugend für eine Erfindung von Betrügern, die christliche für ein Product der Narrheit erklärte, u. schr.: The fable of the bees, Lond. 1706 u. 1714; Inquiry into the origin of moral virtue, ebd. 1732, 2 Bde.; Free thoughts, ebd. 1720 u. ö. (deutsch, 1726); Schriften französisch übersetzt, ebd. 1740, 4 Bde.
