Fossīl

Fossīl (v. lat.), aus der Erdrinde gegraben, zu ihr gehörig, od. durch sie verändert; daher Fossilien, so v.w. Mineralien; im weitern Sinne die mehr od. weniger veränderten Überreste vorweltlicher organischer Wesen.
