Garamantes

Garamantes (a. Geogr.), großes, ausgebreitetes Volk in Afrika im heutigen Fezzan u. im Lande der Tibbus, ihre Hauptstadt war Garăma (Germa, jetzt Dscherme). Die G. waren zum Theil feige, furchtsame Höhlenbewohner; theils trieben sie Ackerbau u. lebhaften Handel mit den Carthagern, wohl auch Sklavenhandel, denn sie machten auf die benachbarten Äthioper förmliche Jagden, wie auf wilde Thiere. Ihre Sprache klang, nach Herodot, wie das Gekreisch der Fledermäuse. Durch den Zug des Cornelius Balbus u. den Aufstand des Tacfarinas kamen die Römer in Berührung mit den G.
