Göland (Gavia Briss.), bei Cuvier Untergattung von Meve od. Langschnäbler (Schwimmvögel); hat keine Wachshaut, von Entengröße. Arten: Mantelmeve (Larus marinus L.), fast von Gansgröße, weiß, mit schwarzblauem Rücken u. Flügeln, vierzehig, gefräßig, im Norden; Eier sind wohlschmeckend; Bürgermeistermeve (Latus consul Mey., L. glaucus Temm.), weiß, mit hellaschgrauem Mantel, gelbem Schnabel, fleischrothen Füßen, im Norden; frißt Fische, Aas, Unrath, wird frisch gegessen od. eingemacht; Schwarzköpfige Meve (Cavia melanocephala), mit tiefschwarzem Kopfe u. Oberhalse im Sommer, ganz weißem im Winter, Rücken u. Flügel bläulichgrau Schnabel karmin-, Füße korallenroth u.m.a. Arten.
