Hillel

Hillel, 1) H. ha Babli (der Babylonier), geb. um 60 (od. 110 od. 120) v. Chr. in Babylon; einer der angesehensten Lehrer der Mischnah, Mitglied des Synedrium u. bei Herodes in großem Ansehen. Von Schammai wich er in vielen Punkten der Halacha ab u. zwar fast stets erleichternd. Seine Anhänger, die Hillelsche Schule, vermehrten den Zwiespalt, welcher fast zu bürgerlichen Unruhen führte. Von ihr stammt die erste Sammlung der Mischnah. H. wird fälschlich als Stifter der Pharisäer bezeichnet; er starb (nach dem Talmud) 60 (od. nach And. 10) n. Chr. Sein Sohn Simeon u. sein Enkel Gamiel folgten ihm. 2) H. Ben Jehuda, genannt ha Naßi (der Fürst), Vorsteher der Schule zu Tiberias, 358 angeblicher Begründer der jüdischen Kalenderberechnung.
