Howitt (spr. Hauitt), 1) William, geb. 1795 zu Heanor in Derbyshire. aus einer Quäkerfamilie, studirte Naturwissenschaft u. Philosophie, ließ sich in Nottingham als Apotheker nieder, beschäftigte sich aber fortwährend literarisch; obgleich in Nottingham zum Rathsmann gewählt, wendete er sich doch von da weg nach Esher; 1841 bis 1844 lebte er in Heidelberg, von wo aus er ganz Deutschland besuchte. Nach England zurückgekehrt, betheiligte er sich 1846 an People's Journal, gründete aber 1847 ein eigenes Blatt, Howitt's Journal. Dies literarische Unternehmen brachte ihn in Geldverlegenheiten, u. er siedelte 1852 nach Australien über. Er schr.: Book of the seasons, 1831 u.ö.; History of priestcraft, 1833, 8. A. 1852; Pantika (Novellensammlung), 1835; Rural life in England, 1836, 2 Bde.; Colonization and Christianity 1839; The Boy's Country Book 1839; Visits to remercable places etc. 1840 f.; The student life of Germany, 1841; Rural and domestic life of Germ., 1842; German experiences, 1844; Hall and hamlet 1847, 2 Bde.; Homes and Haunts of the British poets, 1847, 2 Bde.; Madam Dorrigton of the den (Roman), 1851, 3 Bde. 2) Mary geb. Botham, ebenfalls Quäkerin aus Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, seit 1822 Gattin des Vor., begleitete ihn auf seinen Reisen u. machte sich bes. in Deutschland mit der deutschen Literatur bekannt; sie schr. mit William The forest Minstrel (Gedichtsammlung) 1823; The desolation of Eyam (Gedichte); Literature and Romance of Northern-Europe, 1851 f., 2 Bde.; allein schr. sie: The seven Temptations (Gedichte), Lond 1834; Ballads and other Poems 1846; die Erzählungen Work and wages, 1842; My Uncle the Clockmaker, 1844; die Kinderschriften: The child's picture book, 1844; Our cousins in Ohio, 1849; außerdem übersetzte sie Romane von Fr. Paalzow. Fr. Bremer u. A. ins Englische.
