Ibas, war erst Presbyter, dann seit 435 Bischof in Edessa. Der Antiochenischen Auffassung der religiösen Wahrheiten, namentlich Theodors von Mopsvestia, befreundet u. der Cyrillischen Richtung abgeneigt, wurde er wegen seiner im Briefe an den Perser Mares ausgesprochenen Ansichten Nestorianischer Ketzerei verdächtig, vom Concil in Tyrus 448 zwar losgesprochen, aber von der Räubersynode in Ephesus 449 verdammt u. abgesetzt, vom Concil in Chalcedon 451 abermals eingesetzt, aber von den Jakobiten nicht anerkannt u. st. 457. Er übersetzte mit Kumas u. Probus die Schriften Theodors von Mopsvestia ins Syrische; sein Brief an Mares, welcher nur noch in griechischer Übersetzung[767] vorhanden ist, ist eines der Drei Capitel, s. Dreicapitelstreit.
