Manuscript

Manuscript (v. lat.), Handschrift, bes. aus alter Zeit als Original od. in Abschrift vorhandenes Exemplar einer Schrift, im Gegensatz zu einer durch den Druck veröffentlichten Schrift. Das Material, worauf sie geschrieben sind, ist Holz od. Blätter, Rinden, Elfenbein, Leinwand, Papyrus, Pergament, Papier. Der Form nach sind die M-e entweder Rollschriften (Volumina), od. unsern Büchern ähnlich gelegte Flachschriften, u. zwar gewöhnlich in Quart-, selten in Folio- u. Octavformat. Daß Zeit, Ort u. Schreiber einer Handschrift am Ende angegeben sind (datirte Handschriften), geschieht zwar auch, doch nicht gewöhnlich, aber man kann das Alter eines M-es theils an dem Material, theils an der Schrift u. an der Schreibweise erkennen. Die Wissenschaft, welche dieses lehrt, ist die Diplomatik (s.d.). Pergamentmanuscripte, deren alte Schrift entweder weggekratzt od. weggelöscht u. darauf etwas Neues geschrieben ist, nennt man Palimpsesten od. Codices rescripti, vgl. Codex 6). Bisweilen werden literarische Erzeugnisse als M. gedruckt, was so viel bedeutet, als nur im Interesse des Autors vervielfältigt, ohne daß dieselben dadurch dem großen Publicum zugänglich gemacht werden od. der Autor sein Eigenthumsrecht daran verliert.
