Gerichtssitz der Grafschaft Pulaski, am Arkansas River; Staatenhaus, Staatsgefängniß, Arsenal, Haupt-Landamt der Vereinigten Staaten, mehre höhere Erziehungsanstalten (St. Mary's Academy u. St. Patrick's Institute); unter den Kirchen namentlich die katholische Kathedrale St. Andrew, katholisches Frauenkloster (Convent of our Lady of Mercy), Sitz eines römisch-katholischen u. eines Episkopalbischofs, Handel, Dampfschifffahrt auf dem Arkansas River; Eisenbahn nach Memphis. L. wurde 1829 angelegt u. hatte 1853 über 3000 Ew.; 2) Städtischer Bezirk in der Grafschaft Kendall im Staate Illinois; 1000 Ew.
